Regional Economic Health & Cost Sharing

Current Status:

  • Calgary’s economic health affects surrounding municipalities and the entire province.
  • 47% of Airdrie residents commute to Calgary for work, and they are a big beneficiary of public projects like the Green Line to the north.

How I Will Take Action:

  • We need to make an effective business case to the province for additional economic stimulus.
  • I will explore regional cost-sharing models for mutually beneficial projects such as transit.

Accountability

Current Status:

  • We cannot afford to start projects and not finish them.
  • There is very little follow up on previously commissioned city reports & activities such as Resilient Calgary, White Goose Flying Report, and the Calgary Cultural Plan.
  • Significant time and resources are spent consulting the community and experts, but change does not occur unless there is follow up on targets.

How I Will Take Action:

  • I will seek to implement stoplight reporting on the city’s website to keep the public apprised of Council’s progress on various initiatives:
    • Stoplight reports use the colour red to highlight recommendations that have not been started, yellow for those that are on-going and green to indicate completed recommendations.
  • This level of transparency will allow the public to hold elected officials to account in areas where little progress is being made.
