Snow Clearing

Current Status:

  • We spend less money on snow clearing than Edmonton despite having more road surfaces and more snow over the last 10 years.
  • Poor snow clearing makes it difficult for residents and delivery services to get through neighbourhoods without significant wear and tear on vehicles.
  • Delayed road clearing also makes city services less efficient: cancelled and stranded city buses disproportionately impact students and frontline workers.

How I Will Take Action:

  • Effective snow clearing is not just about convenience, it’s also about public safety.
  • I will advocate for better prioritization of snow clearing in the budget and more responsive service.

Garbage & Recycling

Current Status:

  • In 2015, the City of Calgary Council approved a revised target of 70% waste diversion by 2025.
  • There is no incentive or reward for using less with the large garbage bins the city provides.
  • Garbage bins in public parks & pathways are almost exclusively filled with dog waste, which should be diverted to compost.

How I Will Take Action:

  • Although it requires provincial legislation, I will be a vocal advocate for Extended Producer Responsibility as a key policy for reducing the costs & environmental impact of waste & recycling.
  • I will push for the city to consider a small garbage bin program as a solution for many seniors living on a fixed income who use only a fraction of their bins.
  • I will investigate adding compost bins in parks and along pathways. I’d enjoy walking my dog, Dennis, and diverting waste along the way.
